30-Second Advice Marketing Consultants talk about the economy

Vidya Sartorius
What should a dental practice do about marketing in today's economy? The first thing is to acknowledge the current economic state as a team and then make an agreement to not empower the negative conversations that are swirling around. The team needs to find and take proactive actions to keep your practice productive, energetic, and positive.

  • Pay close attention to your current patient base. Improve communication to existing patients. Follow through with your recall programs and select 1-2 simple marketing ideas for reaching your existing patients.
  • Ensure your external marketing message is not limited to only a few, but that it's reaching a wide audience and that your services are varied.
  • Do not panic. Do the above consistently and you will reap rewards. Be patient.

There is no way to make your practice "recession proof". The economy will impact every business, however, you can make your practice "recession resistant", meaning that you can develop your practice in such a strong and stable manner that in spite of what happens in the economy, you will be ready to handle it. There are three major aspects of your practice that help you become and remain "recession resistant" and they are:

  • Establish and nurture a great team. Team members must be committed to the success of the practice and must be willing and able to perform at a top level – every minute, every day, every interaction.
  • Develop and administer systems that are so effective that they will remain stable in challenging times. The success of your practice will be in direct proportion to the success of your systems.
  • Be a strong leader. Be a leader of yourself. Make a decision to be positive, supportive, and encouraging. Be a leader of your team and a role model of with an excellent attitude. Be a leader of your patients, leading them to make decisions that are good for them. Your patients will be a direct reflection of you.

When things get tough, we have to respond, not react. A lot of people react, make it complicated, and go into crisis mode. You have to make a choice not to participate. Go back to the simple things that made you who you are today in dentistry. Then focus on simple actions and simple systems for the future.
